Week 4 ยท Prototype

Start with a rough draft.

A low-resolution prototype only needs enough to let someone take a turn. Sketch it, play it, then change it.

Paper, blank cards, dice, pencils, tape, bottle-cap counters and a hand-drawn path laid out for a rough board-game prototype

Use what you have

A prototype kit

  • BoardPaper or cardboard
  • SpacesPencil or marker
  • CardsIndex cards or scraps
  • PlayersBottle caps or folded paper
  • ChanceBorrowed dice
  • ChangesSticky notes and tape

Three ways to begin

Draw a path first

These are starting shapes, not finished game boards. Choose the one that fits your class decisions.

??STARTGRADUATE

Like a simple race-to-the-finish game

Winding trail

Move through spaces from 101s to graduation. Mark a few spaces for events.

CARD PILESTART

Like a square-board circuit

Around the edge

Place spaces around the outside; leave the middle for a card pile or shared goal.

STARTPROJECTSINTERNSHIPSFINISH

A journey with a decision point

Choose a route

Split the path for projects and internships, then bring the routes back together.

Make the first playable version

Just enough to test one turn

  1. 01

    Sketch

Draw a start, a finish, and a few spaces. Label where a player makes a choice.

  2. 02

    Add pieces

Make a marker for each player. Write one or two sample cards if your game needs them.

  3. 03

    Try a turn

Explain the goal, take a turn, and notice what is missing. Change the paper, not the whole game.
